collecting data from custom mibs
Hello,
We have some linux servers, checkpoint firewall applications are running on these servers. We want to monitor cpu, memory utilizations and number of connections on network interfaces for these servers.
We have the mibs of the vendor (checkpoint), but we don't know how to create a device/report template for these mibs.
Thanks

Hi Sharabi,
For your linux servers you'll want to make sure you have Net-SNMP installed and running. Denika comes populated with UC Davis reports.
As for your checkpoint firewall, here is what you'll want to do:
1. Discover the device (If a hardware template does not exist it will automatically create it, you will need to specify the name of the hardware template
2. After the hardware template is created continue with discovering the device
3. After discovery, at the bottom of the page you'll see "STOP: Click Here if you do not see the report you wish to discover." This will walk you through the wizard of adding reports (based on OIDs you want to monitor).
Do you know the OIDs you'd like to monitor for your firewall?

Hello,
We want to add the Checkpoint oids for monitoring since these are not included in Denika. When we discover the device, denika gives us the option to choose reports from the device template. Then we select the option “STOP: Click Here if you do not see the report you wish to discover.” Then denika directs us to a page where we can edit the device template for that device. Since our oids are not included, we again choose the option “STOP: Don't see the report you want? Click here to create a new report template.” Later, we enter oid and ip for discovery. It founds and creates the reports needed. But we cannot add any more oid for that device for other reports.
Also, that newly created reports is not saved under device template, such as, when we choose that template for another device or re-discovery of the same device for other reports, that report is not seen under that device template.
As a summary, we have several machines with same snmp settings, we want to make a device template with more that one custom oids, then discover then with that template (choosing previously created report templates for other devices with same setting)
Thanks,
Regards,

Re: collecting data from custom mibs
Hi sharabi,
You can add custom OID's to Denika and then use the device templates to re-discover the same device type with the new custom template.
Are you discovering different devices types, such as Cisco routers and switches? Each device type get's its own template, so if you add a custom OID to one device type it will not show up for a different one.
I think the best course of action is to troubleshoot this step-by-step on our scheduled meeting tomorrow, so we can pinpoint exactly what's not configured properly.
Thanks,
Paul
